Established in the year 2016, The Healing Touch Foundation is based in a village called Chilwadi (pop. 2270), in Osmanabad district of Maharashtra.

The Foundation is a non-profit organization operating predominantly in villages and rural areas for the betterment of poor, underprivileged and marginalized sections of the society.

Osmanabad district, and the Marathwada region in general, is known as one of the  poorest, most backward and under-developed areas in Maharashtra. Moreover, the area gets little rainfall and is prone to frequent droughts.

The Foundation aims to impact the broad ‘quality of life’ of the local people by  undertaking projects in a wide spectrum of critical areas – water conservation,  drinking water, education (with focus on girl-child, computer literacy), Swachh  Bharat, women empowerment and environment. After demonstrating impact in Chilwadi, the Foundation aims take its learnings and  honed processes to other villages in the neighbourhood.

One of our fundamental beliefs is – ‘Involvement of local people helps build the best and the most sustainable solutions’.

To inspire the citizens of Chilwadi, a visit of volunteers from  Chilwadi was organised to Hiware Bazaar, which has been  declared as a ‘Model Village’ by the State Government of  Maharashtra.

Many of the projects planned in Chilwadi are on the lines implemented in Hiware Bazaar.

River Restoration

Water is the most critical resource for any agriculture based rural economy like Chilwadi.

A river called Bhogavati (a small stream, really) passes through the boundaries of the village (approx 30 sq. km.). There  are 9 old check dams, between 30-50 years old on this river.  All these are in a dilapidated state and are totally ineffective in holding monsoon water. Also, the river carries sewage from Osmanabad town which is upstream, about 14 km.

.

Rebuilding these check dams is the most critical part of the rejuvenation of Chilwadi.

Check Dam No.1 Restoration

The Final Impact

  1. Groundwater rejuvenation up to 2 km on both sides of the check dam.
  2. Water storage extended from Nov to Feb.
  3. Groundwater levels improved from 700 ft to 300 ft.
  4. Rejuvenating the waterless borewells and water wells.
  5. Farmers able to water their crops 2-3 times, doubling their crop yield.
  6. Drinking water issue resolved even in peak summer.

PROOF OF CONCEPT

Drinking Water

Lack of clean drinking water was a major problem leading to many water-borne diseases.
•During the monsoon water is contaminated with sewer from the upstream town Osmanabad worsening the situation.
•Water stored in buckets and utensils the harsh summer months for days led to diseases like  Chikangunya, Malaria and Cholera.

  1. Two RO water filter systems were installed at two ends of the village to support  the population of 2300.
  2. 20 L of clean filtered water can be bought for Rs. 5.
  3. This also provides a part-time maintenance job to 2 women.
